Duck rescued after being found shot in head by crossbow

Posted: Updated:

Officials say a duck is recovering after being found in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a crossbow bolt sticking through its head.

The Daily News of Iron Mountain reports Almost Home Animal Shelter got a report about the duck and called wildlife rehabilitator Phyllis Carlson. The bolt was removed and the duck -- called Valentino since he was found just before Valentine's Day -- is expected to be released.

Carlson says it's "inhumane" and "unsportsmanlike" how the duck was wounded.

It's legal in Michigan to shoot a duck with a crossbow, but it's currently out of season. The person responsible could face a fine and jail time.

Randy Gustafson of Northwoods Wilderness Outfitters says crossbow bolt had a practice tip, so it was "someone screwing around, being stupid."
