ALMA, MI (WNEM) -

A man has been charged with arson in connection with a large fire that broke out in downtown Alma on March 2.

Michael Young, 59, from Alma, was arrested on Tuesday, August 23. He was originally charged with multiple arson counts.

Several businesses were impacted by the 3 a.m. fire in the 300 block of Superior Street, including Jane's Barber Shop, People Link Staffing, a hair salon named Hair We R, Young's Gym was in the process of moving locations and a space was being renovated for a drone shop.

We're told the fire started in the second story of one building, breached the fire wall, and spread to a second.

Kelly Maxwell is a stylist at Hair We R.

"Most of our stuff is probably gone, which is probably product and our curling irons. And our other stuff that we use to do our hair, it's gone," Maxwell said.

Alma City Manager Phillip Moore said this a huge loss to the downtown area.

"We had four active businesses going in downtown. So it clearly would hurt out downtown," Moore said.

If the buildings are a total loss, Moore said they will rebuild.

It's believed the buildings were empty when the fire broke out and no firefighters were hurt.
