Left lane drivers beware, the South Paw Initiative is underway

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Left lane drivers, Michigan State Police are looking for you.

Arguably one of the most frustrating situations for freeway drivers is being caught behind a left lane driver.

That’s the person who isn’t attempting to pass, but just believes they can drive in the left lane.

The South Paw Initiative is working to change that, with a little education and may be a few tickets.

After getting numerous complaints Troopers are planning to address the problem. Now through the end of April, MSP from the Lakeview and Rockford posts will be watching for drivers hanging out in the left lane, and pull them over.

F/Lt. Chris McIntire of the Rockford Post says the main goal is education because many people simply don’t realize the left lane is reserved for passing.

But he does say that in some cases tickets could be handed out.

So what’s the problem with driving in the left lane? Besides leading to road rage, it can disrupt traffic flow, and be dangerous as other drivers try to get around the log jam.

TV5 did some checking, but sorry drivers, at this point there is no plan to bring the same kind of education program here.
