FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

It was a fun, yet critical event, to reduce hunger and teach students about nutrition.

TV5’s David Custer emceed Backpack Night at the Gateway Centre in Flint on Thursday night.

It provides at-risk children with a backpack full of foods, including two breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks for every weekend throughout the school year.

"So there's a huge need for this program, $100 feeds a child for an entire school year," said Margie Shard, CEO of Shard Financial. "So even though our event is sold out, you can go online and donate and you can really make a difference in a child's life."

The program serves roughly 2,500 children.
