Coach Tim Hibbard always preached the importance of playing tough.

"No matter the circumstance, be a tough guy," said former player, Brandon Davis.

Thursday night would be Clio JV basketball's toughest challenge.

Like the games before, they huddled before taking the court.

But this time, Coach Hibbard wasn't laying out the gameplay.

Instead it was his wife Terri Hibbard urging them to go out and of course, play tough.

"He loved you all," Terri Hibbard said. "I gave him to you for many years, and I wouldn't have it any other way."

Tim Hibbard coached basketball and football for nearly 30 years.

On Tuesday, he died while clearing the snow from his driveway, leaving behind his wife and three children and a Mustang family that he'd come to love.

"I was afraid to come here, because this is a second home to him. And being here and seeing all the support, it makes me feel better," said son, Josh Hibbard. "He had a heart of gold. He cared about his kids."

It was clear the love goes two ways.

The team presented his wife with a game ball, signed by each and every one of them.

"He really shaped me. Became the leader I am today because of him," Davis said.

Special t-shirts were made in honor of Coach Hibb, the nickname he went by.

On the back was his favorite quote.

"’Who's your friend.’ He was always there for us, he was our friend," Davis said.

The school sold those shirts for $10 each. They plan to take all those proceeds and put them toward a scholarship fund for Coach Hibbard.

"He always said I don't coach for the money, I coach for the relationship with the kids," Josh Hibbard said.

Coach Hibb's death is still tough for some to comprehend.

But the game was therapy to those who loved him.

"I think he had them prepared for as best as he can to handle a situation like this," Josh Hibbard said.

As years go on, no one will remember the score of the game.

But they will always cherish the time on the court with a man who taught them about being tough in life.

Arrangements have been made for Hibbard's funeral. There will be a visitation on March 7, from 2-9 p.m.

Hibbard's funeral takes place March 8 at the O'Guinn Family Funeral. A visitation will precede the funeral from 9-11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Coach Hibb Memorial Fund.
