FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Flint Mayor Karen Weaver welcomes the Democratic debate to the Vehicle City with open arms, but, who wouldn't?

"I remember I got a phone call asking would Flint be interesting in hosting the debate – one of the debates," Weaver said. "And I thought, why wouldn't Flint be interested in hosting one of the debates? This is exciting for us. It keeps us in the national political spotlight, where we should be."

Weaver said it's an excellent opportunity to highlight local businesses and movers and shakers around town.

On a night when Flint is front and center, the city's water crisis gets top billing.

Weaver announced a new initiative, and she said the initiative is an example of the kind of good thing that happens when a problem such as Flint's takes the national stage.

"That's one of the things people have talked about: has any of this national attention done anything for us?" Weaver said. "Well, look at what's happening, and look at the press conference we just had about Flint Water Works and what it's going to do for our young people."

That initiative is called Flint Water Works.

It gives young people jobs and skills in Flint.

And it even came with a little star power, Chelsea Clinton stood alongside her to help launch the program.
