FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Actor Mark Ruffalo was in Flint Monday taking a look at the issues surrounding the Flint Water Crisis, and what still needs to be done.

Ruffalo is the founder of a nonprofit organization called Water Defense that advocates for clear water. He joined Tom Steyer, the founder of NextGen Climate, for a bus tour through the city.

The purpose of the tour was to focus on key demands including making sure residents are reimbursed for the contaminated water they were forced to buy, adding new pipes and jobs and in the long term, infrastructure. They also met with Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, the pediatrician credited with bringing the issue to the spotlight after she found elevated levels on lead in children.

During a press conference held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Ruffalo said he wants to ensure that a political Band-Aid doesn’t cover up the truth of Flint’s poisoned water.

“The governor will put together some sort of blue-ribbon panel to basically let the problems sorta sink away from the sights of the cameras. It becomes imperative at that point that the community organizes,” Ruffalo said.

Ruffalo says that while Flint may feel isolated, water issues are actually happening all over the country. “The sad truth is what we are seeing happening in Flint is really being replicated all over the place. There is a kind of complicity to mask the real troubles that are happening with our water all over the nation.”
