HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, MI (AP) -

A coal-fired power plant near Bay City is opening up for tours before it closes in April after generating energy for more than 75 years.

There's a media tour Friday of the J.C. Weadock plant in Bay County's Hampton Township. Members of the public are expected to tour the facility on Saturday. Advance registration was required for tours and an online listing says signup for the public tours has ended.

The plant once operated eight units, but six were retired in 1980. Weadock units 7 and 8 were added in 1955 and 1958, respectively. Consumers Energy says that when combined the units can generate 310 megawatts of electricity serving 300,000 households.

The plant is part of the Karn-Weadock Generating Complex. The D.E. Karn units will remain in operation.
