SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Construction work is set to begin on a strip of I-75 next week.

The work will take place on I-75 between Dixie Highway and M-46. It will include work on the sound wall along southbound I-75, median work, and bridge construction, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

"You'll start seeing construction vehicles and materials and equipment coming out to the job site. You'll see lane closures on northbound and southbound," said MDOT spokesman, Brian Ulman.

Crews are constructing a sound wall on the southbound side. Northbound lanes will be rebuilt and bridgework finalized.

The construction will require lane closures on northbound and southbound I-75 through the summer. Each direction will be reduced to two lanes from March 14 through May 27.

On May 31, the northbound traffic will be shifted to the southbound lanes, MDOT said. The directions will be separated by a moveable wall.

"[It’s] going to be a great project. Increasing the lanes from three to four. It will provide a lot better movement and safer movement for the public," Ulman said.

Ulman credits the recent warm weather for the early start to orange barrel season and said he's hopeful the project might finish ahead the planned completion date of November.

"That's a great thing for us. Get off the road as fast as we can and make it a little easier for the traveling public," Ulman said.
