Investigators have identified the man who died after leading police on a chase through multiple counties Saturday.

According to Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser, troopers responded to reports of a Thetford Township man in possession of a firearm Saturday afternoon. Troopers located the vehicle at Clio Road on I-475 in Genesee County.

When police attempted to conduct a traffic stop to check the welfare of the driver, William Jennings, 49, of Clio, refused to stop and led troopers on a short pursuit, Kaiser said.

While following the vehicle, troopers observed the driver repeatedly displaying a handgun.

"Tire deflating devices were utilized in an attempt to stop the vehicle but were avoided by the fleeing driver," Kaiser said in a news release. "In an effort to end the pursuit which creates significant safety issues for other motorists, troopers utilized a precision immobilization technique to stop the vehicle which was successful.

According to Kaiser, this caused the vehicle to slide off the roadway into a ditch near Birch Run Road along I-75 in Saginaw County.

When troopers reached the Jennings, he was found unresponsive. Despite efforts to administer first aid, Kaiser said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"At this time the cause and manner death have not been determined," Kaiser said in a news release.

An autopsy is underway.
