Secretary Julián Castro of the Department of Housing and Urban Development reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to helping the city of Flint in light of the ongoing water crisis.

"At the end of the day the end result of our actions and our words need to be that the residents themselves have a better quality of life,"

On Monday morning, Castro met with Flint Mayor Karen Weaver along with U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee prior to taking a tour of the Oak Street Senior Apartments, a historic school built in 1898 and recently rehabilitated into 24 affordable senior apartments through the HUD 202 program.

His presence meant a lot to Weaver.

"I was really happy to have him," Weaver said. "You know one of the things we know the federal government has been sending us support and it lets us know that they are taking some things seriously".

Castro’s presences didn’t do much to help the fears of some Flint residents.

"House are useless now, how are you going to sell a house in Flint?" said resident Jim Burns.

Burns is homeowner in the Vehicle City, and although he's optimistic about HUD's visions for injecting some cash flow into certain neighborhoods, he's not totally sold on the idea.

“I'd say the city could come back if they invest money into it," Burns said.

Kildee remains optimistic the investment is coming.

“Honestly right now, since my folks are focused on Flint's recovery anyone who shows leadership on that gets a little bit of extra support," Kildee said.
