ALPENA, MI (AP) -

Authorities have confiscated dozens of animals, including rabbits, dogs, cats and birds, in an apparent hoarding case in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula.

The Alpena News reports police and animal control officials wearing protective body suits and respirator masks gathered the animals on Wednesday in Alpena.

Authorities say there were as many as 50 rabbits running freely around the home and six adult dogs. The home's owner was allowed to leave.

Officials say they learned of the animals and condition of the home when city employees needed to enter the home to fix a plumbing issue. The Huron Humane Society was called to check on the animals and a request for a search warrant was granted.

The house had feces and urine littering the floor. It likely will be condemned.
