MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

The Great Lakes Loons are looking for host families.

The single-A affiliate for the Los Angeles Dodgers uses families to house their players during their 140-game season.

Host family coordinator Kathy Biskupski said the program compares experience to foreign exchange student programs.

“They want a home environment and a place they can relax,” Biskupski said. “The players truly become part of your family. They’re younger guys and some are far away from home.”

The Loons' season runs from April to September, with half of the games played on the road.

Host families are not responsible for transportation, and may charge a nominal amount for rent if desired. They are not required to prepare food, but if rent is charged, food is asked to be provided.

“They’re kind of limited,” Biskupski said. “They are teenagers, college students, they don’t have a lot of money to spend and they just really want a home.”

Anyone interested in becoming a host family can contact the Loons by calling 989-837-8855 or emailing them at loonshostfamily@yahoo.com.
