SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

It’s officially spring here in Mid-Michigan, and that means the sun may be causing more problems for drivers during their morning commute.

AAA Michigan has sent out a statewide traffic safety advisory urging drivers to be aware of the sun glare. State Police are also offering some tips on how to deal with it, including slowing down to give yourself more room between vehicles.

“You’re not always able to see as clearly as you can at other times. This is one of those ideal times to give yourself a little more space between you and the car in front of you,” said Lt. David Kaiser with the Michigan State Police.

Another tip is to invest in some polarized sunglasses.

“If you get a good pair of polarized sunglasses, it will help reduce the glare and it helps you to better see,” said Kaiser.

Also, drive with your headlights on, clean your windshield and use lane marking as a guide when the glare makes it hard to see.

A government highway safety report says there’s usually a ten-percent increase in the number of pedestrian fatalities at this time of year due to drivers being blinded by sun glare.
