Theresa Yancer has been planning her wedding for more than a year, but her reception plans have been in limbo as of late.

"I wanted it to be special and this kind of throws a wrench in it because we have to move it," Yancer said.

She wants to have it at the Midland Armory. But the occupational safety and health administration has required testing for lead dust at the facility where test results recently showed trace levels.

Lead dust is common in buildings with an indoor firing range where powder is sometimes found sticking to the walls. The problem is figuring out how and when to clean it, with May 14 being her big day.

"It's perfect. It's an empty space so you can make it whatever you want. That's what I liked about it and they're really nice people there," Yancer said.

A Midland Armory spokesperson said the danger to anyone at the armory is minimal, but that caution is necessary and public events are on hold.

The spokesperson said this process is playing out at every armory throughout the country.

Cleaning supplies have been purchased for the facility, a process that we are told should take two weeks. After that, the building will once again be tested for lead dust levels. If the tests come back under the required levels, the Armory will once again open to the public.

"When you have a vision of something and it's not going to happen it's kind of hard to move past it," Yancer said.

Thursday morning Yancer said the Armory had canceled her reception, and she was being forced to do it somewhere else.

By Thursday afternoon Yancer reached out again, and said her fiance received a call from Lansing, and said the reception was once again a go for the Midland Armory. She tells us that the building is currently being cleaned.
