A few days ago it looked like it wouldn't be long before we'd have to cut the grass.

But now, the shovel is much more valuable than a lawn mower.

"I thought we're going to have one more storm, it's always like that, you know?" said resident Steve Klein.

Klein used some manpower to clear his driveway and sidewalks after a few inches piled up in a hurry, in downtown Midland

Robert Rugenstein was out dropping down some salt in front of Pizza Sams.

"It's here, we're going to deal with it," Rugenstein said.

The roads aren't the only concern. Consumers Energy warns the freezing rain starting to fall could be some power outages in Midland and to the west.

Consumers said the weight of the ice on the lines could knock out power to some, but Klein said he's prepared.

"I've got a fireplace, I just throw a few pieces of wood in there and it heats up the front room and the dining room, so I'm not concerned at all," Klein said.

But if there is a wide-spread outage, Consumers has 200 crews on standby, and a mobile storm unit set up so crews have quick access to equipment and supplies.

And at least for now, the shovel and snow-melt is important to keep around.

“Hopefully we get home before it all freezes over,” Klein said.
