Natasha Kolba hasn't seen her children in three years.

"It's hard. It's extremely hard," Kolba said.

Kolba said both she and her ex-husband lost their parental rights, deemed unfit parents by the state.

"There's not a day that goes by that I don't wonder what's wrong with my kid or if I ever would know if they got in a car accident or they like went out of town to California on an airplane. That's terrifying," Kolba said.

This week the Michigan Court of Appeals upheld a ruling that parents declared unfit lose their rights to make medical decisions for their children.

Kolba disagrees with that decision.

"If it was a kidney and I was a perfect match for it, which obviously I am because I’m their mother. I wouldn't know that they needed this," Kolba said. "It could take them years to find one and they could die because they didn't have one."

Kolba said not being able to play an active role in her children's lives is gut wrenching. She said she hopes the state law changes, giving people like her jurisdiction over her kid's medical decisions.

"I wouldn't put it on any of my worst enemies. I would never do that," Kolba said.
