BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

If you were out enjoying the warm weather on Easter and found yourself swatting away a mosquito, you weren’t alone.

Bay County Mosquito Control said the biting pests have been developing in woodland pools for the last few weeks, and they are preparing to fight back.

Treatment will start soon on small woodlots, and are making final preparations for the annual aerial treatment. That should happen April 4 through April 15. During the aerial treatment three planes will treat roughly 45,000 acres of flooded woodlot habit to curtail adult spring mosquitos.

During the aerial treatment, a soil bacterium control material known as Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, or Bti, will be spread. Bti will help eliminate mosquito larvae, and apparently poses little harm to other wildlife, vegetation or humans.

The Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission will also begin treatment soon. The program will begin within the next two weeks and takes five to eight days to complete.

The program will cover 45,000 acres of woodland in Saginaw County.

Midland County Mosquito Control is performing aerial treatments throughout April. The treatments will cover more than 54,000 acres of woodlands.
