Long-time TV5 news personality Dick Fabian is being remember by co-workers after passing away on Saturday at the age of 81.

“Dick Fabian was the master broadcaster, always a lot of fun,” said former TV5 Sports Director Art Neal.

Fabian was a fixture here at TV5 from the 1970’s until he retired in 1998. Neal has fond memories of Fabian. One that really stuck out was the time that he asked him if he wore a hair piece, right before Fabian went on the air.

“I said Dick, is that rug? He looks at me like, NO! I said prove it. Yank it. This is about 30 seconds to air time. He didn’t do it, okay. The minute the red light came on he did good evening, whatever it was he did, and on the air he went [grabbed his hair] ‘I’m doing this because Art Neal thinks I wear a toupee. Art, I don’t, and now everybody else knows it too.’”

A long-time TV5 photographer worked side-by-side with Fabian for years, and also has some special memories of him.

Gary Linkowski remained close to Fabian, even having a photograph of the two together on a living room table. “He was a constant pro. He sometimes didn’t show it. He was a guy that was always real easy to work with, and his interview showed that also. He would get the people there, on whatever story we were doing, it was like he knew them 10 years. It was just amazing how he could do it, he just had that something about him.”

Both men will say they’ll miss their former colleague and friend. “I first met Dick when I was 16-years-old, when he was doing the Battle of the Bands. Here was this DJ, and he worked for WKNX radio at the time. He was a legend back then. Never thought I’d end up working with him, let alone being one of my closest friends,” said Linkowski.

“May you rest in peace guy, you were a great guy. Talk to you later,” said Neal.
