MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Investigators believe a man drowned while kayaking down the Chippewa River.

On March 26, Midland Police received a call for 2 unoccupied kayaks floating down the river near Whitman Street.

Police went to the scene and heard someone calling for help nearby.

That’s when they found Bruce Reed Jr., 38, of Sanford, on the river bank trying to revive his father, Bruce Reed Sr., 61, of Midland.

Police report that Reed Jr. saw his father floating in the river and had gone into the river to rescue him.

Reed Sr. was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death is suspected drowning, but no autopsy has been ordered.
