Increase of breaking and enterings tied to drug use?

Posted: Updated:

Steve Beson is  convinced a bump in breaking and enterings is due to drug use.

“They’re definitely breaking into houses to get the money to support their habits,” Beson said.

The life-long Bay City resident said the neighborhoods are most affected by heroin and other drugs.

“If someone needs to get their heroin fix, they’re probably going to steal to get the goods,” said Michael Cecchini.

Cecchini, director of public safety, said there has been a slight bump in crime.

“Overall stats I looked at, year-to-date stats, compared to last year; and we’ve had nine more breaking and enterings than we had last year at this time,” Cecchini said.

Cecchini also attributes warmer weather for a reason for the increase.

He offered some tips to help prevent becoming a victim:

  • Lock your doors and turn on the porch lights
  • Lock your vehicles, remove any valuables

"Keep an eye our for your neighbors," Cecchini said. "If you see suspicious activity, call us, call the Department of Public Safety if you want to create a block watch group."
