A Mid-Michigan man has been sentenced to prison for failure to stop at a fatal accident he caused.

Scott Gunn, 27, of Burton, has been sentenced up to 15 years in prison for the charge relating to the 2013 accident that resulted in Jeffrey Lee’s death.

Flint Police said on Sept. 28, 2013 at 11:30 p.m. Lee was hit by a black extended cab Silverado, allegedly registered to Sherry Long and allegedly driven that night by her son, Scott Gunn.

After the accident Gunn allegedly left the scene without helping Lee. Lee died the next morning as a result of his injuries.

Long, who worked as a crime victim advocate for the Genesee County Prosecutor at the time of the accident, and Gunn worked together to cover-up the accident and tamper with evidence by repairing the truck in secret, police said.

Sherry Long and Leon Gunn, Scott Gunn’s father, have already been convicted of tampering with evidence.

“This sentence is another step forward toward justice for Mr. Lee and his family,” Attorney General Bill Schuette said. “It is unfortunate when people believe they are above the law and attempt to cover up their crime to avoid any consequences, but as today’s sentencing proved no one is above the law.”

Scott Gunn was convicted on July 25, 2016 and sentenced on Aug. 18.

“While nothing will undo the events of this 2013 accident, my hope is that Mr. Lee’s family will feel a small sense of justice knowing that the man responsible has been sentenced for his crime,” Schuette said.
