SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The leak that forced some residents to evacuate a Mid-Michigan neighborhood has been capped and repairs are underway.

A contractor hired by Consumers Energy, hit a natural gas service line that runs to a home on the 3000 block of Linger Lane near King Road in Saginaw County’s Bridgeport.

"The fire truck is coming down the street and next thing I know Consumers is pulling up," said Dick Sayers, a homeowner near the leak. "We're digging holes out here, we got a gas smell. Quite a bit of excitement out here."

There was the fear of fumes, and explosive potential until Consumers Energy was able to cap the leak.

"Gosh I said my garage door is open and he said don't close it! We don't want a spark," Sayers said.

Caroline Young had to leave her home too.

"This is scary to me, very scary to me. You know you got a lot of lives on the line here," Young said.

Crews worked to restore gas to a handful of homes in the area.

"I hope everything gets fixed up and clear so we can get back in our house and get warm," Young said.

Consumers Energy said that there were flags at the dig site. It took two hours to cap the leak.

Sayers said he wants Consumers to check twice before they dig near his home.

"I'm hoping they can get the rest of that electric line down through here without breaking anymore gas lines especially not my gas line," Sayers said.
