DAVISON TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Jane Harrison was outraged that a pile of American flags were dumped on the ground to be thrown away at the Davison cemetery, according to Suzie Wendling who posted this picture of the abandoned flags online.

“That's terrible, that's our flag,” Harrison said.

Harrison said this is totally disgraceful to our veterans.

“The flag to me is freedom and my family is military and my son just got back from Afghanistan and I respect the flag I really do,” Harrison said. “This hurts it really does.”

And it could be an emotional time of the year for people that have loved ones at the Davison Township cemetery as spring clean-up has already started, brush piles and even grave blankets in the dumpster.

Jim Hansen the owner of Hansen Funeral Home said the improper disposal of the flags at the cemetery is sad.

He said he knows a thing or two about respectfully retiring a flag since he volunteers his time once a year to bury the damaged American flags.

“They were not disposed of properly,” Hansen said. “Hopefully were going to find out it was some thought to be good citizen's that did it wrong and not somebody we can point the finger at.”

TV5 reached out to the Davison Township Supervisor’s office, who are responsible for clean-up at the cemetery.

The township said they heard about the flags being dumped and took action. However, they said the flags were not from the cemetery and unsure where they came from.

Harrison said she hopes this just doesn't happen again.

“That's our colors. People have fought for that and I just think that it should always be respected,” Harrison said.
