FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Ideas for their future. Flint Southwestern Academy is gearing up for Career Day.

“We are hoping they take away an idea. Because these students coming around are sometimes not exposed to that,” said student advocate Fred Jackson.

Jackson helps plan the annual event.

“It's really important because a lot of our students in the district are not sure what they want to do after graduation,” Jackson said. “So we try to expose them to different careers throughout the nation.”

More than a dozen colleges and 30 careers were represented in the packed gymnasium.

The career fair is a team effort by Flint Community Schools and Central Michigan University. However, there were plenty of other colleges in attendance.

“I'm excited to talk with the students. I have been out here many times. Just to talk about different colleges and careers paths,” said Chad Bannan, Baker College.

Speakers on hand included everyone from EMT workers to cosmetologists to U.S. Marines.

Jackson said the school district is hosting another career day in Flint at Northwestern High School on Friday.

He said he hopes it will help guide even more kids to a successful future.

“This year has had a great turn out,” Jackson said. “Never have had such a great turnout like this year and it's excellent because it gives the kids an opportunity.”
