FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Several class action lawsuits are in the works to secure financial relief for residents.

One team has filed three since November, and is opening an office in downtown Flint.

"It's a class of people who have been harmed the same thing," said Michael Stanley.

Stanley works for Legal Services Eastern Michigan. He is working with Flint residents to bring their fight for clean water to the courtroom.

“A whole group of people who have been damaged or believed they been  damaged by something related to the water crisis could come together in a class or a group of people and all file a lawsuit for personal injuries at the same time,” Stanley said.

But class action lawsuits take time.

"They can take place over 10 years it not uncommon," Stanley said.

The group is opening an office in downtown Flint on Tuesday, and will be joined by environmental activist Erin Brockovich.

“That means a great deal she has become a staple in this area of the water rights and the water lawsuits,” said attorney Trachelle Young.

Brockovich’s support is one of the reasons Rhonda Kelso said she was motivated to be a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

"Well it wasn't intentional but due to circumstances beyond my control it was necessary for me and my daughter for our health and well-being," Kelso said.

Currently, more than 4,000 people have signed up to be a part of the class action suit. There is a recruitment event on Tuesday expected to draw more names to the docket.

Kelso said she isn’t worried whether she signed up for the right case.

"It really didn't make any difference which route I chose, whether it had been individual or class action,” Kelso said. “The matter at hand is getting this conflict resolved."
