A man was found dead by police after an explosion on the second floor of a home.

Police have identified the victim as David Saultman, 65, of Ottisville.

"We received a phone call from the nephew who found his uncle deceased in the residence behind me," said Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser.

That phone call prompted a police to investigate the home on the 11000 of Dodge Road in Otisville.

Kaiser said officers were shocked by the discovery of an explosion inside the home, which blew out the second story windows.

Bomb squad officers located the second floor explosion and called in more equipment and an additional bomb squad from Lansing.

"The bomb squad actually identified a location in an upstairs bedroom where the explosion occurred," Kaiser said.

Kaiser said the explosion was the result of mixing some kind of chemicals upstairs, but police are not sure what it was. Kaiser said he doesn't believe it was related to drugs.

But a search of the basement did uncover drugs.

"There was marijuana found in the basement of this residence," Kaiser said. "He was a caregiver, he was allowed to have some, but the amount we found far exceeded what he was allowed to have."

In addition, police discovered some other potentially explosive material and quickly destroyed it.

"It was disposed of her behind us in this field with an explosion by the bomb squad," Kaiser said.

An autopsy is scheduled on Thursday for the man to help determine the cause of death.
