Madeline Hebert has swam pretty much her whole life.

"It wouldn't just affect the swim team, it would affect the whole swim team," Herbert said.

A lot of that time was spent at the Garber High school pool in Essexville.

But that soon could be a thing of the past.

"I'm doing some relays myself to help save the pool," Herbert said.

Years of disrepair have put the pool on the chopping block.

Faced with mounting repair bills, parents and supporters gathered on Friday night to try to raise money and save the pool.

Supporters said the school district just can't afford it.

Maria Vanochten is one of the parents organizing the rescue effort.

"Our goal is to try every effort we can to save our pool from closing," Vanochten said.

She said if the community meets their $10,000 goal, the hope is that larger corporations will step in and make up the balance of the repair costs.

"It has been a while since things have been maintained so our goal is to bring it back up to code," Vanochten said.

For Hebert it could mean her ticket to college.

She said she just can't afford to lose the beloved pool.

"I've been in swimming a long time. I was hoping to get scholarships for it. I just really want to save it, to help others as well," Herbert said.

The community has a GoFundMe account in an effort to raise funds for the pool.
