FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The City of Flint begins a new program Monday to try and optimize chlorine and orthophosphate levels in fire hydrants throughout the city.

To do this automatic flushing devices will be installed on 15 hydrants. The devices will periodically release water from the distribution system at a low flow rate.

The goal is to help maintain correct chemical levels to help in the system’s recovery process.

The flushing devices will be programmed to release water mostly at night, but if it happens during the day you may see water flowing from the device.

The city says this will have no effect on water usage or water bills.

The program is slated to continue throughout the summer, and flushers may be moved around as needed.
