FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Road rage has been thrust into the national spotlight after former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith was killed over the weekend in a possible road rage incident.

"A lot of people wonder what is road rage? And it's basically went stress and frustration turns to violent anger," said Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser. "It could be anything from verbal disputes to physical confrontation to driving in an unsafe manner."

Kaiser said it’s important to keep your cool when you’re behind the wheel.

"Basically what we tell people to do for road rage if you're feeling any of those things is to take a deep breath and don't interact with people that are causing you the frustration," Kaiser said.

And if you ever feel threatened or put into a danger by another driver, Kaiser said stay calm and don't engage them.

"If someone is tailgating you and you feel unsafe drive to a public area or police station don't engage these people because you never know what they're capable of as we've seen on TV," Kaiser said.
