LAPEER COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man is fighting for his life after he was involved in a vehicle accident on Tuesday.

Mark Gazette, 51, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet 1500 series pickup truck southbound on Wilder Road in Lapeer Township at the time of the accident.

Carol Betker, 74, of Almont, was driving west on Peppermill Road when she approached the Wilder Road intersection. She ran the stop sign and was struck by Gazette's truck, the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department said.

Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles.

Betker was not wearing a seat belt and is in serious, but stable condition, police said.

Gazette is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for two and a half hours while crews assessed the scene.

Police do not believe alcohol or excessive speed were factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
