MARLETTE, MI (WNEM) -

Two people were injured after their vehicles collided Thursday evening.

The accident happened on M-53 in front of the Hill Top Restaurant in Marlette Township about 6:30 p.m.

James Westover, 70, of Marlette, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic westbound on M-53. Westover turned into a driveway on the west side of the highway and then made a U-turn back onto M-53, according to the Sanilac County Sheriff's Office.

Westover pulled into the path of a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Joseph Hilt, 60, of Kingston, the sheriff's office said.

Hilt collided with Westover's vehicle, causing the Sonic to go into the ditch on the west side of the road. The Explorer went into a ditch on the east side.

Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital for their injuries. Westover was later flown to Beaumont Hospital, the sheriff's office said.

The accident remains under investigation, but alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
