SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

April Wilkins is mourning the loss of her 15-year-old son.

“It’s very hard, very hard for them and very hard for the whole family,” Wilkens said.

She says A’Jaylen Wilkins-Agnew passed away after an asthma attack.

“It’s a scary situation because I would just look at him when he was having those attacks and my heart would hurt because there was nothing I could do,” Wilkens said.

Wilkens said that A’Jaylen suffered from severe asthma for most of his life. In the days prior to his death Wilkens said he was sleeping a lot more. But other than that, he seemed OK.

A’Jaylen’s grandma, Patricia Gaines, said she hated to see him suffer.

“My heart went out to my grandson. My heart went out. But there was nothing I could do but pray, and ask God to take that away," Gaines said. "But now, he’s healed. He’s healed!”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover A’Jaylen’s funeral expenses.

Christopher Craighead, A’Jaylen’s 16-year-old brother said the outpouring of support from the community has been inspiring.

“It means a lot, I’m to the point where I’m actually ready to get me a job, so I can actually try and help out," Craighead said. "Because I want him to have a great home, knowing that he was took care of.”

Wilkins said she wants to give A’Jaylen a going-away service, but is afraid it might not happen.

“That would be very terrible, I’m just hoping and praying that something will come through, something,” Wilkins said.
