SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Students in the Roberts Fellowship program at Saginaw Valley State University will be spending their Saturday making renovations at a local community shelter.

The students have partnered up with AmeriCorps to receive a $350 dollar mini-grant that they will use to repair Midland's Shelterhouse; which provides a safe environment for victims of domestic and sexual abuse.

Susie Balcom is one the the members of the Roberts Fellowship program who will be participating in this weekends project. She said that the team selected the Midland Shelterhouse because it was "close to their heart."

Balcom as well as five other students will be joined by a team of local volunteers who plan to clean up the grounds and build garden beds at the shelter.

This project is part of Global Youth Service day which encourages young students to engage in community service projects.
