ISIS is calling for the death of a local Muslim leader, Shayk Hisham Kabbani.

Kabbani has been at the forefront of speaking out against acts of terrorism carried out in the name of Islam.

But now, the threat is being directed at him.

"How can they speak out?" said Dana Baldwin.

Baldwin lives a few blocks from the Islamic Supreme Council in Burton.

He said he now understand why so many Muslims choose not to do what Kabbani does on a regular basis.

"No wonder moderate Muslims are afraid to speak out, because other Muslims might kill them," Baldwin said.

While Baldwin doesn't believe ISIS would travel to Mid-Michigan, he is concerned that a copycat may try to attack Kabbani, a man who Baldwin said clearly promotes peace.

"They're just going to put it on the internet and hope some goofball is looking for some recognition," Baldwin said.

In an online release, right before the anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, ISIS called for the death of several Muslim clerics living in the west, Kabbani one of them.

Residents said they'll be on the watch for anything suspicious and at the same time hope Kabbani is protected.

"I always do my best to keep an eye out and be vigilant about what's going on around me," said resident Ron Young.

The Islamic Supreme Council of America (ISCA) has issued the following statement:

"For decades, Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani has been a tireless promoter of moderate, traditional Islam and its teachings of peace and love. We are deeply saddened by these threats, just as we are saddened by all of the violence committed by ISIS and its adherents against people of all faiths.”
