With the weather around Mid-Michigan being as nice as it has been, many of us have been outdoors getting our yards ready for the spring and summer season. While this weather is great for yard cleanup and garden preparation, it's not great for burning brush today.

The National Weather Service Office in Gaylord has issued a statement concerning Elevated Fire Danger Conditions for today. While this is below critical fire dangers, which often call for Red Flag Warnings, burning is still not recommended.

The reason for the elevated fire concern is due to our warm temperatures and very dry conditions over the last few days. While winds are not particularly strong today, if breezy conditions are combined with warm temperatures and low humidity, the risk for fire danger is greater.

We have attached a map in the article to highlight areas where the risk is greatest, courtesy of the Gaylord NWS office. Click the image to enlarge the map. Open debris burning is not permitted for the counties shaded in brown.

According to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, open burning is defined by the burning of unwanted materials such as paper, trees, brush, leaves, etc. are burned in open areas without passing through a chimney or stack.

So when will burning conditions improve? A cold front will move through later on this evening, bringing the possibility of a few rain showers. It will also bring cooler temperatures, which will reduce the fire danger.
