The Saginaw County Jail is at about 68 percent capacity and as the county faces a budget shortfall going into the next fiscal year, Sheriff Bill Federspiel came up with a plan.

He wants to take about 50 inmates from the overcrowded Genesee County Jail and house them in the Saginaw County Jail.

The county would get $45 a day for each inmate he houses from Genesee County. That money would cover the $820,000 budget shortfall the county anticipates, Federspiel said.

He's still ironing out the details with the Genesee County sheriff and the Department of Corrections.

On May 3 the Saginaw County Board of Commissioners back the sheriff's plan. They said this will keep them from asking for a tax increase on August's ballot.

"I do not want to raise taxes. I want to keep our millage and services the same and I want to keep the rate the same so people are not paying more. So they can renew just the money as a renewal, as opposed to increasing it," Federspiel said.

He said about 100 beds will remain available to deal with any potential uptick in crime in Saginaw County.

The capacity at the Saginaw County Jail is 515 people. Right now, they're averaging about 350 inmates.

The inmates from Genesee County would be released at the jail in Flint.

The plan could come to fruition as soon as October.
