We got a taste of summer last week with temperatures climbing into the lower 80s. While we won’t be seeing 80s this week, as April draws to a close and with the month of May on the horizon, NOAA has issued their May outlook and warm weather lovers are going to like it!

The May temperature outlook and the May precipitation outlook were issued today and if the Climate prediction center is correct, it looks like we will see above normal temperatures and around normal precipitation.

The great lakes is under the orange color, which means about a 40 percent chance that the month of May will be above normal in regards to temperatures. The average temperature for the entire month of May is 68 degrees in Saginaw. The monthly average for Flint is 69 degrees. With about a 40 percent chance of above average temperatures expected, the upper 70s and lower 80s may not be hard to come by. Record high temperatures for May are usually in the lower 90s and that may be a stretch, but the 80s are always enjoyable. This is of course not set in stone, but with a warmer than normal winter it’s a good bet we’ll have a nice warm spring.

As for precipitation, May is labeled as EC over that great lakes. That stands for Equal Chance, which means there is an equal chance to see above average rainfall or below average rainfall. Basically normal precip amounts can be expected. May is one of our rainier months, along with June and August. According to the national weather service, Saginaw on average receives 3.38” of rain the entire month, Flint see about 3.08” of rain.  So with warmer temperatures and the start of severe weather season here in Mid-Michigan anticipate to see a fair amount of rain in the coming month.

Overall the entire NOAA spring outlook (April-June) has above normal temperatures pegged for Michigan so we may be able to keep the warmer weather rolling right into June. We will be in the 50s and 60s this week so don’t pull out the summer clothes just yet, but if you prefer the warmer weather you may be in luck next month.
