Local name to remain part of health center

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A group of health centers has provided medical care in Mid-Michigan for decades with a focus on serving the under-insured.

A proposal to change the name of its headquarters is creating an uproar in the community. There is a petition circulating to save the David R. Gamez Community Health Center name,

"I'm very humbled," Gamez said.

He is talking about the outcry from the community to keep his name on the building. Gamez is the founder of health delivery and had served as their CEO.

"I guess I would be rewarded as a legacy for the Latino community here in Saginaw," Gamez said.

The Health Delivery said they have no intention of taking Gamez's name off the building.

Jeff Reinarz, Health Delivery spokesperson, said Health Delivery is changing its name to Great Lakes Bay Health Centers, but the Gamez name isn't going anywhere.

"He used to be our CEO. He actually founded Health Delivery. He's very well known in the community, we understand that," Reinarz said.

Gamez did not have much to say about the news, but the look in his eyes said it all.

"Well, I don't know how this got around somehow, but it did. Thank you," he said.
