BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

25 years ago today two Mid-Michigan officers were ambush and killed in the line of duty.

Bay City Officer Raymond Rexer,37, and Officer Terry Jablonski, 44, were called to a neighborhood disturbance in Bay City on April 26, 1991.

When they arrived, Jeffery Knapp walked outside a home with a gun in a blanket and distracted the officers. That’s when his brother, John Knapp, opened fire from a home across the street.

Jablonski was hit four times and died at the scene.

Rexer died after surgery on a head injury.

Jeffery was arrested at the scene, but John took off.

He later surrendered to former TV5 photographer Tom Knaub.

John Knapp was sentenced to life behind bars.

Jeffery Knapp is eligible for parole in 2049.
