GM announces investments at Mid-Michigan, Tennessee factories

General Motors is investing $118 million in Bay City Powertrain in a move that will create 29 new jobs and retain 67 others.

Those being retained include 55 hourly and 12 salaried positions, for a total of 394 employees at the plant.

The lion's share of those positions will be members of UAW Local 362. Pedro Santos is their president.

"At one time they had 4,000 jobs in this plant. They said people would have to come here like an hour before work just to get a parking spot. And we want to fill it back up. And this is great to have these new jobs coming in here," Santos said.

The investment will be used to support production of future high efficiency engine components. It brings GM's investment in the facility since 2010 to $249.4 million.

The plant produces engine components used in Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.

"This investment reflects the excellent workforce at Bay City Powertrain, whose commitment to building benchmark quality engine components for many of GM's award-winning vehicles is visible every day," said Bay City Powertrain Plant Manager John Lancaster. "It also demonstrates the teamwork of GM and our UAW partners, as together we continue to innovate and bring new powertrain solutions to our customers."

Lancaster said morale has always been great at the plant and it will continue to grow with the influx of new money being pumped into the factory.

"It also brings hope because we can bring in you know, the next generation of workers. And so many folks are third generation employees here so it just keeps that rolling," Lancaster said.

Meantime, GM is also announcing an investment in a plant in Spring Hill, TN. That announcement includes a $789 million investment, 792 new jobs, and the retention of 16 jobs at that site.

That facility makes the new Cadillac XT5 midsize SUV and two four-cylinder engines. It will start producing the GMC Acadia SUV later this spring.
