SWARTZ CREEK, MI (WNEM) -

A family in desperate need of new ramps around their family home received their wish, thanks to a group of good Samaritans.

"I explain it this way, I don't have just a lot on my plate - it's a whole platter. This gives me a little more room to take care of it," said Mimi Damon.

She takes care of her disabled husband, daughter and her beloved grandson Jake who is quadriplegic and suffers from cerebral palsy. The family was in desperate need of some ramps, so Keith O'Neal, from the Good Samaritan Network, stepped in to help.

"Grandma every day has to find volunteers to help run her grandson in and out of the house. This has given them freedom and liberty to function and everyone should have that access," O'Neal said.

The family is getting two ramps, thanks to the community and Tri-City Construction.

Mimi Damon said their old ramp is dangerous and she looks forward to what the new ramp will bring to her family.

She helps her husband Glenn who has suffered from strokes and a heart attack. He said he's excited for the new ramp.

"It'd be really nice ya know, to be able to get outside and be around," Glenn Damon said.

Their daughter Lisa has epilepsy and back issues, but she is just happy her son Jake will be able to get around easier.

"Independent. Ya know, that's the key word. He's going to have some independence," Lisa Damon said.

Mimi Damon said she couldn't be happier with the new ramp and is also hoping for something else to make her job a little easier.

"We're looking forward to hopefully getting a walk-in shower to help with making his bathroom accessible for him. We don't have a walk-in shower," she said.
