GLADWIN COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A 3-year-old boy is hospitalized after shooting himself in the arm.

It happened Wednesday night in Grout Township, that’s in Gladwin County.

Sheriff Mike Shea says that his department got a call from the E.R. that they were treating a young boy for a gunshot wound.

When officers arrived they found the boy had shot himself between the elbow and shoulder.

The child’s father said he had stepped out of the home for a few moments and thought the nine-millimeter was out of reach.

That father heard a pop, and noticing blood on the child’s arm, rushed him to the hospital.

The boy was taken to Hurley Medical Center for further treatment.

The father is cooperating with the investigation, but Sheriff Shea says he could face some misdemeanor charges.

The report has been handed over to the prosecutor’s office to see if that will happen.
