GRAND BLANC, MI (WNEM) -

The sudden death of a beloved teacher has closed a local school.

Grand Blanc High School is closed Friday due to the death of high school English teacher Ms. La'Rhonda Gowdy.

Posts on Facebook show that Gowdy was part of a Peer Mediation class. That class is organizing a candle light vigil at Grand Blanc High School Friday at 8-8:30 p.m.

Gowdy served as a guiding light to many students who are now forced to continue on without her. Many of her students said she was not only a teacher, but also served as a role model for students.

Veronica Hart has family members that attend the school, she said it's a tough blow for the Bobcat community.

"We are a community and a family here. And I can't imagine losing a member of your family. I mean, it's gotta be like a huge hole in your heart to even go back there," Hart said.

The district is not releasing details on Gowdy's death. They just said it was sudden and unexpected.
