How do the 2016 April showers stack up?

We all know the saying, "April showers bring May flowers", especially as rain becomes quite common in Michigan during the spring time.

Sometimes, those stretches of rain never seem to end, and even a few flakes manage to fly in April. Other times, we're graced with a nice prolonged period of sunshine with temperatures in the 60s and 70s like this year.

So did that gorgeous stretch of weather put us behind on our usual April showers? Let's look!

Here are the normal amounts of rain we usually see in April, for Saginaw, Flint, and Houghton Lake. While we'd love to include more stations, these are official record-keeping stations from the National Weather Service.

  • Saginaw: 2.69 inches
  • Flint: 2.69 inches
  • Houghton Lake: 2.32 inches

Now, here's how much rain we've received up to Thursday, April 28th. The final numbers will be available on May 1st.

  • Saginaw: 1.62 inches (1.08 inches below average)
  • Flint: 1.96 inches (.73 inches below average)
  • Houghton Lake: 2.14 inches (.18 below average)

All three reporting stations, up to this point, have reported below average rainfall for the month of April. Houghton Lake didn't stray too far from normal, but Saginaw checks in over an inch below average.

For Saginaw and Houghton Lake, we did see a stretch of 10 days in the middle of the month with a trace or less of precipitation, while Flint saw that same stretch for 9 days. That dry stretch of weather definitely played a bigger role in Saginaw and Flint, while Houghton Lake still managed to get close to normal.

However, had one or two of those days had rainfall, Houghton Lake very well could have checked in above average.

Interesting Note

While Houghton Lake has checked in a touch below average in rainfall for the month of April, they are ahead well above their April snowfall average.

  • Normal April Snowfall: 3.7 inches
  • Actual 2016 April Snowfall: 11.9 inches
