Businessman and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has told University of Michigan graduates to be wary of partisan politics and intolerance.

Bloomberg delivered Saturday's spring commencement address at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

In a prepared speech, Bloomberg said the United States is facing "serious and difficult challenges," but candidates in this year's presidential election are "blaming our problems on easy targets."

He says that "for Republicans, it's Mexicans here illegally and Muslims, and for Democrats, it's the wealthy and Wall Street."

He also told graduates that thinking critically is among "the most important skills in the working world."

Bloomberg was to receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the university.

He now serves the United Nations as its secretary-general's special envoy for cities and climate change.
