Despite challenges, U of M-Flint students graduate

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Despite all the adversity surrounding their city, students at the University of Michigan-Flint celebrated a major accomplishment this weekend.

On Sunday members of the 2016 class passed their tassel to the left and walked home graduates.

But looking back, most grads, like Emily Brender, say it was hard work, but worth it.

“Eventually you hit a point where there are so many papers and so much to do and it feels like you’ll never hit the end. Then one day you’re filling out your graduation application and you’re here, and it’s done.

Other students we spoke with said U of M-Flint was the best choice for their future.

“It was long, it was challenging, but the university has great faculty and community to bond together to get you through it,” said Ashley Brower.

For many of the graduates, making it through the process during the water crisis was a challenge in itself.

“For a while we didn’t know what was going on. And then they said the water was safe, it was not safe. I just brought bottled water with me,” said Tyler Legato.

The class of 2016 has 1,030 graduates, and a record 843 of them walked in the ceremonies.
