Woman warns of wheelchair safety on buses after terrifying experience

Posted: Updated:

One Mid-Michigan bus rider experienced a terrifying experience last week.

The woman flew across the bus in her wheelchair. She said the restraint system on some of the buses aren't safe for those in wheelchairs.

"I take the buses all the time. I mean, it's no big deal to me. It's easy, but when it's not safe, it's not right," said Connie Kincaid, STARS bus rider.

Kincaid uses the STARS bus system in Saginaw to get around town. She also uses an electric wheelchair and said she now fears for her safety on the bus.

This comes after an incident last week when she was injured after a bus driver turned a sharp corner and caused her to tip over in her wheelchair.

"He just was going so fast and turning so fast that I slid and hit another person. I landed on top of this lady that was like 67-year-old," Kincaid said.

Kincaid was bussed to get to the hospital that night be checked out. She has some bumps and bruises, but she said the worst part is the incident should never have happened.

"That one bus did not have the shoulder strap. If I would have had something to grab on to I would not have hurt myself," Kincaid said.

The general manager of STARS, Sylvester Payne, said his buses come with a standard restraint that works on all types of wheelchairs.

Payne said he has no record of Kincaid filing previous complaints about safety concerns on the buses.

Kincaid said she is concerned not only about her safety, but the safety of other riders.

"It's not just me. I know there's three or four other people in wheelchairs that get on the bus and they can't strap them in because the things don't hook and that's dangerous," Kincaid said.

She said she brought her concerns about the restraint system up to bus drivers several times. The general manager said no previous complaints have been filed.
