The historic Oscoda County courthouse is considered a total loss after catching fire.

Firefighters were still on the scene early this morning in Mio putting out the hot-spots, and while the walls are still standing, officials say the building was destroyed.

A passerby is the one who spotted the flames and called for help. Officials say the flames started in one of the upper levels in an old courtroom, got into the walls and the attic and spread to the whole building.

Right now it’s unclear what damage has been done to the various offices inside the building, including the Clerk/Register of Deeds, MDOC Officers, etc.

The county plans to meet soon to decide what to do about relocating those offices.

No one was hurt fighting the fire and it’s still unclear how it started.
