GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The Genesee County sheriff is urging residents to help get tougher laws on animal abuse.

Sheriff Robert Pickell posted on his Facebook page Wednesday urging residents to lobby their legislators to pass bills that protect animals.

The post came after the sheriff's office had to rescue a black lab from a Genesee County home. The owner was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of animal abuse, Pickell said.

The lab showed signs of starvation, malnutrition and was unable to stand due to being caged for so long, Pickell said.

"They deserve the right to live long, happy lives and those who harm them should no longer get a slap on the wrist. I don't know anyone who can look into an abused animal's eyes and not feel the need to take action," Pickell said.
